WHAT TREES AND BUSHES CAN DO

Temperature The cooling effect of a young healthy tree is equivalent to 10 air conditioning units. Trees can cool a city by up to 5.5 °C if the green area covers at least 40% of the development. Noise A green belt just 3 m wide can reduce noise levels by up to 25 % and wind speeds by 30 – 50 %. Humidity An adult tree can retain more than 15,000 litres of water per year and humidify the air to a volume of up to 400 litres per day. Fauna The tree is home to many species of animals - for example, 500 to 1,000 species of insects can be found on a single oak tree. Trees also reduce the amount of pathogenic bacteria in an area by 10 – 20 %. O 2 Air A mature tree produces oxygen for 50 people per day and absorbs 22 kg of CO 2 per year, which is about the same amount as a car driving from Prague to Brno.

FAQs

WHAT TREES DO WE PLANT AND WHY?

We concentrate on planting indigenous trees such as linden, maple, oak, alder, elm, birch, etc. We also plant fruit trees. Our plantings do not include bred cultivated varieties or small forest seedlings. We leave forest restoration to legally responsible institutions and forest owners. Our planted trees are 1.5–3.5 metres (4 ft 11 in–11 ft 6 in) tall. This ensures that the trees are not suffocated by grass, which grows more quickly. Trees of this size are also easy for volunteers to handle, and they are not overly pampered trees from ornamental nurseries.

WHERE DO WE PLANT TREES AND BUSHES?

The ideal time for planting trees and bushes is during dormancy. The trees or bushes can therefore concentrate all their strength on taking root in the new location. The best times to plant are in the spring (March and April) or autumn (October and November).

WHO LOOKS AFTER THE TREES AND BUSHES AFTERWARDS?

Immediately after they are planted, the trees and shrubs are taken over by the local municipality, which will ensure watering and care for the trees or bushes for at least the next 5 years. This responsibility ensues from a Commitment for Subsequent Care. No more than two years later, we visit the planting location and inspect every tree and bush. We share the results of these inspections with the municipality, so that any necessary action can be taken. HOW ARE THE TREES PLANTED?

On the agreed day we will prepare the tools, trees, bushes and all necessary materials. Together we will show you how to plant the tree or bush, and then the volunteers can get to work. An organiser from Sázíme stromy will be there to help and make sure that the planting is done correctly. We have good experience with half-day plantings that last 3–4 hours. But we also organise whole-day plantings. If you are interested, we will arrange a place for a campfire with the municipality. Roasting sausages is a pleasant addition, especially in the autumn months.

CAN WE OFFSET CO₂ WITH YOU?

Yes, you can. We plant trees in agricultural landscapes, thereby creating new areas of greenery that can be counted in the offset. Since 2021, we have been working in partnership with the non-profit organisation CI2, o. p. s on the WE OFFSET CO₂ programme (www.offsetujemeco2.cz), which is sponsored by the Ministry of the Environment and the Ministry of Industry and Trade. Among other things, the donated amount can be deducted from the tax base according to applicable legislation in the Czech Republic.

CAN WE GET TREES AT A LOWER PRICE?

We plant trees in agricultural landscapes and the trees must have a minimum size, otherwise they would not survive and would be useless. The price covers the trees, stakes, bite protection, binding ties and all work connected with searching for the location, consultation with a landscaper to ensure that the trees are chosen correctly, the work of a coordinator for ordering material and trees, all transport, whether that of the coordinator or materials, planting itself, coordination of volunteers, agreement with the municipality, marking out the planting, formative pruning after planting and a check on how the trees are doing one year after planting. All of this is included in the price of the trees, and if we want to plant trees sustainably and be as sure as possible that they will survive the coming years, we can’t lower the price.
